Learn to draw what you see in a natural way, beginning with still life and progressing to the human form. Individual instruction in drawing with pencil and charcoal geared to beginner students. Studies include perspective and space, line, form, shape, gesture, and contour. Please bring HB, 2B, 4B, and 6B pencils, drawing or newsprint pad, charcoal, and kneaded eraser to first class.

Traveling

A journal that stays at one public location, such as a cafe, shop, or bookstore. It should be open to everyone, but they’ll have to visit the location. These should be controlled (not left somewhere), and before placing one at a place of business, make sure to have permission from the owner.

MCA 10x10 Benefit Show and Sale

This is my first time participating in the MCA's 10x10 Benefit show. I was asked to create a 10x10 painting. My inspiration came from a trip to a tea room with a couple of girlfriends. I used the picture of my friend texting under the table...sounds familiar? Anyway, with her permission, I named the piece "Tea Time Sexting".

Trying out printmaking at home!

Tools and Materials

and PAPER ( printmaking paper works best but feel free to experiment with different kinds of paper. You will be amazed at the results!

PRINTMAKING- Getting Started!

I printed my reference photo in black and white the same size as my block. I secured it a the top with a piece of tape. Then with a black marker sketched in the outline, coloring in the black parts of the drawing.

You can put as much or little detail as you would like but for a small piece like this one I am only working with bigger shapes ( face is the only area where there are more smaller lines to be cut out).

With your carving tool , you will be cutting into the white portion of your drawing. The raised surface will get ink and register the image.

if you want some texture in the background , leave some of the lines on the block . Otherwise, make sure that there are no raised surfaces on the white part of your block.

Next, squeeze a thin line of ink onto the mixing tray. Put your brayer in and move it around. Make sure that the whole roll is equally coated ( but do not put too much ink as it will clog your other lines).

A warning to the true printmakers, this is my home version of the printmaking process, so I am freely placing the paper onto the block. If you want it to be placed in the same spot each time then you need to make marks on your paper to guide you. I am estimating the placement and am not worried about it being perfectly straight ( later on I might!).

Applying steady pressure with your barren, but without moving the paper out of place , rub the image onto the paper. If your paper is smaller than the block , put an extra piece of paper in-between the two so as to keep the barren clean AT ALL TIMES!

Finished Print

Gently pull the paper of the block and place it on a clean surface to dry. If there are white areas where ink should be .That means that you need more pressure applied at that spot. It takes practice to find the right amount of pressure.

STEP-BY-STEP demonstration

Start by placing your canvas squares next to each other
and putting that first layer of color covering the whole
surface. Continue with the rest. I picked 8 canvases to
work on so the paintings create a grouping.

Mix a big batch of your starting color so you do

not run out half way through.

I chose red as a very vibrant under painting color
to work as a complement to the mostly blue/ green
of the cacti .
You do not have to worry if the paint is not uniform.
It should cover the surface but not obliterate it.

Once your surface is dry, use either a watercolor pencil
or a HB to draw your image.
I prefer watercolor pencils since the lines
disappear once you wet them o rat least
soften up.

I used I blue pencil to make sure I see the drawing.

I picked a light blue for the background. With a
dark mixture, I pulled out the darkest part of
the flowers . This is a small surface so make sure
you do not have too much detail.

I am working with the same palette for all
the pieces so doing them simultaneously
allows you to proceed a faster rate.

At this stage, pay attention to the big shapes.

This piece has a lot of pink in it .
I used alizarin crimson +red light cad + white.

Still working on the background.

Next, I mix a vibrant mixture of yellow+
Thalo blue ( a smidgen) + white.

Once I start applying more paint , I do not
want to lose my red layer of color , so I let
it show through.

After a 30+-day break from blogging, I am back with some new pieces. It has been a challenging month with its ups and downs. I have been working on these smaller acrylic paintings after finishing a commissioned piece ( approx. 40x30in SEE Below).

MATERIALS USED:

-sturdy cardboard ( for the background) or anything else that you can work with
-pin backs ( a pack of 30+)
-tissue paper ( different colors)

-fabric pieces
-tissue paper leaf rubbings
-glue gun

-mod podge
-old brush
-scissors

STEP-BY-STEP Demo

1. I found these sturdy cutout shapes in the scrap booking section. You can use any material that will be strong enough to have a pin back attached to it. As well as any additional things you add to it. If you want to have a signature on the back or a contact info, a sharpie works just fine.

2. Check that the glue gun is hot enough before you start squeezing it. Do not put too much glue on the back just enough to secure the metal pin back. Make sure that you have it facing the right way or it will be much harder to wear it. I did all the backing to my pins at the same time as not to worry about it later on. And to put the hot glue gun away.

3. I take out all the stuff I might use on the working surface so I do not have to get up once I get started. I have more materials than I need just in case I decide to switch it up a little bit.

4. Do not think too much about the final look. Have fun with different colors and textures. If you are using mod podge, apply it on both the back and top of your tissue paper. For sturdier materials I use the glue and then press on it to make it stay.

5. Since this is a small working surface, less is more. Do not put more than3-4 different things on the pin , otherwise it will lose its spontaneity.

6. On some of the pins , I used the words as final accents.

7. Enjoy the process and find someone to trade your pins with. Build your own collection. I found a cute box to store them , facing each other two at a time.

2-DAY PROJECT(acrylic paint on wall)

DAY 1- getting started

First layer of color applied.
I started with the darkest green for the plants.
The bathroom wall was painted a light
cool blue hue before hand.

I wanted to have bright colors at the end. My
little reef changed color from pinkish-red to
pinkish- purple at the end.

The scale of animals/ fish etc.
to the environment are of my own free choosing.

On the first day my goal was to cover

the whole surface with paint to

lessen the blue coming through.

After 4 hours I managed to have a

good solid painted surface to be able to

come back and work with the appropriate

color selection.

In some areas, paint is applied thinly to

allow it to dry faster.

DAY 2- finishing up

Little swirls represent waves. I decided not
to outline all the imagery with the black
paint (but was tempted to).

By adding white to my mixture of

blue+ yellow, I was able to put highlights

on the previously dark parts.

If you feel that you want to add some more detail,

this is the right time to paint in little rocks, plants etc.

Painting the bubbles was fun. Make sure

you have dark areas down first, so you can

place rounded highlights last.

Due to the small space in the bathroom, I was

unable to take a single photo of the whole

scene. This one represents the center

and the right side of the mural.

This is the left side of the mural with the turtle

swimming from the side. Again some more

bubbles. You can see the color of the reef changing.

MATERIALS NEEDED:
1. Acrylic Paint (colors used: white, cerulean blue, phtalo blue, burnt umber, cad.red. cad. yellow & black)
2. palette (paper/ plastic plate will do for a smaller painting)

3. spray bottle to keep your paints moist
4. rags/ paper towel to clean brushes
5. brushes

Once again we start with a drawing. I used a

watercolor pencil but an HB pencil will do as well.

With a mixture of burnt sienna and blue,

I paint the dark areas first.

Since the carpet has intricate detail, I try not to

lose the pattern itself. Keeping the paint

transparent I paint the first layer of paint.

Establishing the background allows for the

main subject matter to be focused on.I used

rich reds and kept reapplying the color in

I did more blending on the legs to accentuate their

smoothness. The play of feet becomes the

focal point. Using darker color around the edges

makes them stand out even more.

I also worked on the couch some more.

For the skin shadows I used

light violet + red + white mix.

PROJECT #7 Step-by- Step Demonstration

MATERIALS NEEDED:
1. Acrylic Paint (colors used: white, cerulean blue, phtalo blue, burnt umber, cad.red. cad. yellow & black)
2. palette (paper/ plastic plate will do for a smaller painting)

3. spray bottle to keep your paints moist
4. rags/ paper towel to clean brushes
5. brushes

( I picked green for no particular reason)

on gessoed paper

Working with diluted paint ( just add more water)

starting in the background working my way throughout

the painting. Look for larger shapes at this stage.

For example, the dark shadow next to her cheek.

Then slowly build up skin tones

without going into too much detail at this stage.

As always I work my way up from the dark tones

to the light.

The wig is a fiery orange-red color. I worked

with cad. red + aliz. crimson + lemon yellow+ cad. yellow

using multiple layers to achieve vibrancy.

The skin tones are leaning toward

cool reds/pinks and purples.

For the scarecrow in the back I used a lot of cad. yellow

with red to make it orange. For highlights I added white to the

cad. yellow . Use sparingly.

The dark parts are a mix of phtalo blue+black.

The last thing I did was to add the highlights ( almost pure
titanium white with a hint of pale blue) on the dress
and the jewelry.

STEP- BY- STEP Instructions

From a large 22x30 in sheet

( I used Utrecht's American Masters printmaking paper)

cut a dozen or so 4x4 in squares

(they can be any size)

Look for dry leaves to use in your collage.

I used them to get the texture by rubbing

them with a side of a wax crayon over a

tissue paper

(I ripped the paper by hand to get that

uneven edge.)

These are some image suggestions for your cards.

My cards have an overall nature theme.

I would suggest that you start with a 5-6 or more

squares and not think to much about the layout.

Make sure that the imagery is in proportion

to the size of your paper. You need 2-3 smaller images.

Tissue paper rubbing of leaves.

Suggested layout of your images.

Keep in mind the size of your project. In this case, 4x4 inches

will require editing on your part. Less is more .

What Is Free Arts?

Free Arts of Arizona is a nonprofit organization that brings the healing powers of the creative arts to abused, neglected and homeless children by partnering with over 100 group homes, treatment centers and shelters in Maricopa County.

By recruiting creative volunteers to share their talents in the visual arts, music, theater, dance, creative writing and other artistic projects, Free Arts of Arizona helps children build self-esteem by unlocking their imaginations.

Many of the children we serve have been removed from their families due to abuse or neglect, and have been placed by the state into a group home. Still other children live with one parent in a domestic violence shelter or both parents in a homeless shelter. Some children live in residential treatment centers where they work to conquer painful issues of physical and sexual abuse, substance abuse, and violence.

All of the children need the chance to express their hopes, fears, frustrations, and emotions.

The creative arts give children a way to identify their emotions and express them through a positive medium. The creative arts give children the tools they need to improve self-esteem and social skills. The creative arts give children a voice.

Start with pale yellow of the bricks.

Paint the dark areas next.

Pay attention to the shadow on the glass

above the door.

Establish the mid-tone values

through out the piece.

Mix enough red-orange to paint the bricks.

Leave a space in between the bricks.

You will re-enforce the pattern

by coming with pale yellow almost white

color in between for a more

organized look of the brick. Use a steady hand and

a small brush.

Finish up the door on the left hand side.

Finished painting.

Start by sketching in pencil.

Work from dark to light.

I mixed black+ violet+ phtalo blue

to create a rich darkest dark color.

In this next step I am mixing colors for the buliding

on the right hand side. A mid dark gray.

Make sure that you finish the background before

you start working on any detail in

the foreground.

Feel free to change things around to get the

best composition possible.

I changed the color of the

boy's shirt from inconspicuous blue to a red.

Notice the red brick buildings

on either side of the painting.

( You are inviting the viewer

into the painting by placing color

strategically).

Let each layer dry in between)

On your palette mix in your gray.

(white+ phtalo blue= black)

Start with the background first.

Pay attention to the architectural detail

as not to lose it with thick layers of paint.

Working from dark to light colors.

Mix in Black+ violet+phtalo blue=

darkest dark( for the windows and shadows

underneath the flower pot)

With a smaller brush make the window

square shape. If you need to fix it

you will be able to once you introduce

the white of the wood on top later on.

Keep painting the dark shapes

before you move on to the

lighter colors.

Make sure you are cleaning your brushes .

To create the deep red of the brick use

cadmium red+ cad. red light + your mixture of dark colors

With red we added some warmth to this

cool urban scene. Pay attention to

the window/ glass and play

of light/ reflections in it.

For the blue inside the windows use

White + cerulean blue+ phtalo blue

Make sure you are spraying your

colors with water. Do not let your

colors dry out and harden.

The flowers are the focal point and we
paint them last. Do not try to be to
rigid with your brush. Be playful when creating
the green foliage around the small
white and red blossoms. Use thicker paint
as we want this part to stand out.

Start with a dominant background color.

Create a 3-D feel to the objects.

Stay with the background colors.

For the green I used a lot of yellow + a little

bit of phtalo blue ( highly staining) + white.

Slowly start building up the subject.

Introduce the darkest, mid- tone and lightest areas.

Make sure you are paying attention to the whole piece.

As you manipulate value ( how light/ dark a

color/ hue is) of one part it affects the area around it.

As you are finalizing the painting, keep in mind that the highlights

come last. One more final glance at your reference and you are done.

	Hatching The most basic method of creating value in ink drawing is linear hatching. Fine parallel lines fill an area, so that from just a slight distance, we have the illusion of value. The closer the lines are, the less white paper shows, and the darker the value appears. Heavier line weight (pressing more firmly or using a bigger nib) also gives a darker appearance.
	Crosshatching Crosshatching uses layers of hatching placed at an angle. Usually, the first layer would be vertical, the next horizontal, the next at forty-five degrees, and so on. This methodical approach can look a little mechanical, so artists often use variation in direction to add interest.

2008 First Annual Via Colori® Street Painting Festival

Via Colori® the Italian Street Painting Festival, debuted in Scottsdale, Ariz. on
Saturday, October 18 and 19, 2008 in Scottsdale’s historic Downtown Arts District. Via Colori® is the modern-day practice
of a centuries-old tradition of street painting. Originally popularized by Italian war veterans
of the early Renaissance who painted religious icons on the courtyards of the great
cathedrals, today it is practiced in festivals throughout the world.
In its inaugural year in Scottsdale, hundreds of artists came together to create
dozens of large-scale chalk masterpieces on the pavement.
Free to the public, visitors saw more than 150 large
scale masterpieces being created by volunteer artists of varying ability and equal passion.
Last year's event featured Guest Artist Melanie Stimmel, an internationally known prolific
street painter.
Established as a celebration of creativity, Via Colori® was first held in Naples, Florida
and has been an annual draw there and in other cities since the early 1990s.

ART PROJECT with Watercolor and Pen/Ink : Melangerie

When I am not 100% focused and not ready to start a big, involved piece I play around with different media and subjects. Last week I made a grid on watercolor paper (11x14in) and decided to fill it up with playful, happy and kid-friendly imagery. I lightly sketched with a pencil first and then added watercolor. Ink was the final touch. I use Koh-I_Noor Rapidograph pens (SEE BELOW).

MATERIALS NEEDED

2. Ruler ( You will definitively need one if you decide to use the grid system. Using the grid is one option.)

3.Pen and Ink

4. watercolor (tubes or watercolor set). Higher quality paints will give you richer colors (and may be more expensive as well!)
5.Spray bottle to keep your colors wet

6. Water container (to clean your brushes)
7. Brushes (Different sizes depending on the size of your images)

8.Rags for clean-up

9.watercolor palette (to mix paint) I use both traditional and non traditional ones. This plastic egg carton folds over and has a lid.

Triptych....Boys will be Boys...

"Cousins" or "Boys Will Be Boys". This collage piece is a triptych. I used 3 canvas panels (8x10 in). They are to be placed 2 inches apart when hanging. I used Serbo-Croatian to create a memento for two cousins spending summer together in Bosnia. In their individual panels I placed their names under their photos. The saying Boys Will Be Boys ties the three panels together.
Materials used:
1. 3-4 Photos ( preferably shot on the same day)

2. Scissors

3.Glue or Modge Podge or Glazing Medium to secure the pieces ( you can use it on top of the image as well it does stain a little bit but it should dry clear. You mostly see the brush marks.

4. Acrylic paint ( Keep the color scheme simple. I chose blue +black +white)
5. Brushes

6. rags for clean up
7. decorative paper for creating borders
8. stencil ( I used this plastic one)

When feeling uninspired, to have your creative juices flow turn to COLLAGE Art...

MATERIALS used for this project

1.4-5 photos (keep the cut out pieces) I used the grass sections and incorporated it into the circle part of the image. You have the consistency in color and theme.

2. Scissors

4. Acrylic paint ( I picked a red , white and black). Choose no more than 2 colors( black and white are considered neutrals)

5. Ruler ( I did free hand most of the lines in this piece for more of a free, organic feeling) For the circle I traced a bottom of a big plastic lid.

6. Stickers/ Letters (optional) you can draw them yourself . I wanted to use the stickers to have more of a uniform look to them.

7. canvas / paper ( approximate size 11x14 in)

Since this is a a piece about a little girl , I put her name in the middle. I had to make sure I had enough room to spell out her name and make sure to add an extra square in between the last and first letter so they do not run into each other in the circle. For the spaces in between the photos I painted in little shapes . I my case I chose hearts and then alternated the color to add interest.

I did start with the red on the bottom and then with white and black on top created negative shapes. I hope you enjoy this project and keep creating collage art.

Photography is a wonderful medium that has allowed me to better communicate with and experience the world around me. Like a lot of my work it is guided more by emotions than intellect. Trailing behind with my knowledge of the digital world and its possibilities I rely on a small portable
( fits- in- my back- pocket) camera ( EXLim Casio10.1) to capture these images.
